Are you a "coffee badger"?!
I came across the term recently while researching trends in hybrid working. I love it.
It refers to an employee who will come into the office for just a few hours at a time, to have a (possibly free or subsidised) coffee and to chat to their colleagues.
Needless to say, advocates of everyone returning to the office full-time are outraged by the very idea.
But I don't see a problem at all.
Having a coffee and a chat with your colleagues is always a good use of time. It's absolutely one of the best things you could be doing when you’re in the office.
Building relationships is key to communication and collaboration, which drive productivity, performance, engagement and morale.
Taking time to sit down and connect, face to face, is the best way to build relationships that will help you manage tricky projects and conversations in future.
Much better a company of coffee badgers than an office full of “Microsoft Moles” sitting at their desks with their headphones on and resenting the commute.
Be more badger.
Want to know more about making an impression in a hybrid role?
One of the arguments against hybrid that I often see is that it makes it difficult for ambitious people to make an impression on senior leadership and to network.
But, as with most conversations about hybrid, this misses the point entirely.
The way to make an impression in your role is the same as ever – be reliable, be credible, be easy to work with, and work for the good of the team and not just yourself. Make sure that people trust and respect you.
The difference in the hybrid world is how you demonstrate and communicate that. (And coffee badgering might be one way.)
If you’d like to know more, I’m running a FREE webinar: Building Your Profile in a Hybrid World.
If you can’t make it, don’t worry. Everyone who registers will receive a recording of the presentation.
For those that can make it on the day, we’ll have extra time for a discussion and for you to ask any questions you have.
